Graduate Internship

WACCBIP offers a fulfilling opportunity for self-improvement and for making a difference by contributing to world-class disease research that improves the quality of life for thousands in the West African sub-region and beyond.

Each year, we select highly promising young Ghanaian graduates into a year-long programme designed to equip them with advanced skills in research work and practical experience in administrative support roles.

The WACCBIP-DELTAS II Graduate Internship Programme, sponsored by the Wellcome Trust, is an extension of the National Service Scheme with the added benefit of thriving within an environment primed to foster direct mentorship and quality professional development. The programme also provides an additional research stipend to support the monthly stipend Graduate Interns receive from the National Service Secretariat based on positive research output.

Interns are selected through a competitive application process and are required to contribute in tangible terms to scientific research during their internship period. Prospective applicants are expected to:

  • have completed undergraduate studies and registered for the National Service Scheme by June of the year of application;
  • have majored in any of the Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Accounting, Law, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, English Communication, or in Linguistics; and
  • be hard working, highly motivated, and interested in promoting scientific research.

Information on application processes for this year’s intake can be found here

High Schools Engagement Programme

The High Schools Engagement Programme (HSEP), is a West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) public engagement initiative that targets students in under-resourced high schools in Ghana with annual programmes directed towards providing information on prospective careers in Science and discussing the causes of and preventive measures against endemic infectious diseases.  Using peer-learning strategies, our Graduate Interns encourage collective action against the diseases and work to inspire high school students to consider scientific research as a career, either directly or in support roles.

The programme is designed as a component of the Graduate Internship Programme, as a final project planned, coordinated, and implemented by our Interns under supervsion of the Centre's Communication & Public Engagement Unit. So far, 3 cohorts of Graduate Interns have completed visits to schools in more than 6 Regions across the country.
